Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our executive team and lead the Financial operations of our organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in operational management within the NGO, banking, school, insurance, or related sectors. With a proven track record of driving efficiency and productivity, the CFO will directly report to the CEO and also work closely with the board of Trustees to ensure that the church’s mission, values, and goals are carried out effectively.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Qualification and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  •  A master’s degree or professional qualification (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, ACA) is highly desirable.
  • A Christian preferably a Female who has worked in the Banking sector and has proven experience as a CFO of a Bank, International School, International NGO, or University.
  • Evidence of attending financial management courses or seminars.
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in financial management, with at least three (3) years in a managerial or supervisory capacity.
  • Excellent knowledge of local and international financial reporting requirements and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for not-for-profit organizations.
  • Familiarity with tax principles, regulatory compliance, and internal control frameworks applicable to charitable entities.
  • Strong leadership, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex financial data, identify trends, and formulate strategic recommendations.
  • Proficiency in using office productivity tools and financial management software.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Planning and Budgeting:

  • Develop comprehensive financial plans and budgets in alignment with the church’s strategic goals and priorities.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and ensure effective allocation of financial resources to support various ministries and initiatives.
  • Monitor financial performance against budgeted targets and provide timely analysis and recommendations to senior leadership.

Treasury Management:

  • Oversee all aspects of treasury management, including cash flow forecasting, investment management, and banking relationships.
  • Implement strategies to optimize liquidity while maximizing returns on investments by the church’s risk tolerance and financial policies.
  • Ensure optimization of the Church Impress System

Financial Control & Reporting:

  • Establish and maintain robust financial controls and procedures to safeguard the church’s assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Lead the financial accounting and reporting process, ensuring accurate and timely preparation of financial statements by applicable accounting standards. This will include but not be limited to monthly and quarterly management accounts and annual audited financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory reporting requirements, regulatory filings, and accounting standards applicable to not-for-profit organizations.
  • Strong controls over procurement activities.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all financial control policies including but not limited to expense management policy, per diem, procurement policy, etc.

Internal Control:

  • Develop and implement internal control policies and procedures to mitigate financial risks and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Conduct regular internal audits and reviews to assess the effectiveness of controls and identify areas for improvement.
  • Prepayment audit.
  • Bank reconciliation.

Financial Operations:

  • Process & capture accurately the activities of the Organization and its subsidiaries promptly.
  • Oversee the deployment and appropriate use of the ERP.
  • Payroll related activities

Tax Compliance:

  • Stay abreast of relevant tax laws, regulations, and exemptions affecting not-for-profit organizations.
  • Collaborate with external tax advisors and legal counsel to ensure compliance with tax obligations and optimize tax-efficient strategies.

Leadership and People Management:

  • Provide strong leadership and mentorship to the finance team, fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive work environment that values diversity and empowers staff to achieve their full potential.

Strategic Planning:

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the church’s strategic plan by providing financial insights, analysis, and recommendations to support informed decision-making.
  • Identify emerging financial trends, risks, and opportunities and advise senior leadership on appropriate courses of action.

Insurance Management:

  • Manage the church’s insurance policies and coverage, including property, liability, and other relevant insurance products.
  • Assess insurance needs and risks, negotiate premiums, and oversee claims processing and resolution.
