Nuru Nigeria – Founded by a former US Marine, formed at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, and fueled by angel investors from Silicon Valley. Nuru Nigeria is a locally Led NGO with affiliates in the US, Kenya, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso. Nuru equips local leaders with tools and knowledge to lead their communities out of extreme poverty by integrating impact programs that address the most prevalent and fundamental challenges of extreme poverty around four areas of need: Hunger, Inability to Cope with Financial Shocks, Preventable Disease and Death, Lack of Access to Quality Education for Children. Nuru Nigeria design training-based poverty solutions that promote self-reliance and service-mindedness to enable local leaders to continue scaling impact long after Nuru Nigeria staff has exited the project.

 

We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Gender Officer

Location: Toungo, Adamawa

Employment Type: Full-time

 

Position Summary

  • The Gender officer will lead the implementation of the project’s gender interventions and will work with the Project team to ensure the activities are well integrated in the overall project.
  • S/he will provide guidance and technical input where necessary, especially on gender analysis, social analysis, and action, gender transformative approaches, impact assessments, and wider gender mainstreaming.
  • S/he will work with all the project team and partners to ensure that Nuru Nigeria’s gender equity and diversity principles are incorporated into all processes and activities within the Project.
  • S/he will act as a resource person in capacity building, knowledge-sharing events, and other relevant activities.
  • This will include developing, reviewing, and updating gender training modules to ensure they are of high standards and monitor implementation.

 

Key Responsibilities

The Gender Officer will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Design and implement a curriculum to promote awareness of gender equality that will ensure representation, rights, and resources in a conflict-sensitive manner, detailing issue areas to be addressed and expected outcomes.
  • Identify critical gender gaps or barriers hindering women and girls’ access to resources, rights, and representation and work collaboratively with the project team to proffer solutions to address such gaps or barriers
  • Act as a resource person on gender equality, gender mainstreaming, and women empowerment, consistent with operationalizing a rights-based approach and providing strategic and technical advice on approaches for transforming harmful gender norms/barriers and advancing gender equality
  • Provide support to all project activities related to gender mainstreaming, with particular emphasis on helping relevant staff analyze program implications for men and women in various communities and ways to address issues.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to community structures including leaders, project volunteers e.t.c on community reflections on gender and social norms, power dynamics, and social change for impact.
  • Train, support, and coordinate field project teams on all gender-related activities.
  • Ensure gender integration in the day-to-day project activities
  • Develop pre and post-training questionnaires.
  • Documentation of the findings of the pre and post-workshop assessments for all the training
  • Participate in gender-related events (meetings, workshops, conferences) and network within the project locations to stay updated about gender-related developments
  • Support the establishment of women’s community advocacy groups.
  • Support the development of at least 10 advocacy plans to enable women to engage community leaders and policymakers.
  • Support the establishment of male-gender champion clubs where possible.
  • Application of the ‘Do no Harm Principles’ throughout the implementation period.

 

Qualification and Experience

  • Degree in Social Sciences, gender studies, or any related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in designing and implementing gender and inclusion programming, conducting gender analysis, experience in gender mainstreaming, and program work including field experience.
  • Previous and traceable training Experience. Must have a demonstrable history of conducting training adaptable to the trainer’s needs.
  • Mandatory experience and passion for Gender Equality and Diversity Work
  • Knowledge and experience in working with civil society are an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Local Context and Cultural Sensitivities. Must understand the specific context and cultural nuances in Northern Nigeria.
  • Experience working with government stakeholders, civil society organizations, and traditional leaders.
  • Verifiable Extensive Experience. Demonstrated expertise in applying gender-responsive and gender-transformative approaches in Northern Nigeria.

Competencies and Skills:

  • The gender officer should have training expertise with the ability to conduct effective training sessions.
  • Gender knowledge and skills. Proficiency in understanding and addressing gender-related issues.
  • Excellent report writing skills. Proficiency in generating well-documented reports.
  • A good command of English and Hausa both spoken and written is essential
  • Verifiable extensive experience in the application of gender-responsive and gender-transformative approaches in Northern Nigeria.
  • Proven expertise in design and Implementation of Gender Equality Programs.
  • Familiarity with Positive Masculinity and He for She approaches and male-involvement methodologies.
  • Experience in the application of Social and Behavioral Change Communication Strategies, especially in extremely sensitive socio-cultural and religious contexts
